    Starting problem

Hi there I have a 95 classic with the 3.9 engine and it has recently started to have problemsstarting when it has been run. it turns over and will hicup a couple of times and it starts about 80% of the time and when it won't it will turn over untill the battery dies. I have replaced the rotor the cap and the ignition wires and the plugs, it runs great when running so I am kind of lost as to what is causing the problem any help would be appreciated.

    So it is flooding?

Customers don’t expect you to be perfect.
They do expect you to fix things when they go wrong.

    Re: Starting problem

I had a similar problem on a non-rover vehicle and it ended up being a short under the fuse panel to the fuel pump relay. Not a bad relay, but a short cutting in and out. Was very hard to diagnose but vehicle would start fine sometimes, I'd park and turn car off to get gas, go inside, etc. then it just would not start. Then sometimes it would randomly start hard, not start, start fine, etc. Just a thought for you.

doesn't have the fuel smell I would associate with flooding and I tried easy start one time and it did not help, I also pulled one of the ignition leads out and it was getting plenty of arking at the cap. the funny thing is it will drive upto and over the speed limits localy(70) + sound and drive fine, it will start fine in the morning (first start of the day) after that it is getting unreliable!

    Re: Starting problem

I had a very similar issue. Intermittent non-starts. Replaced relay, didn't work. And as for the fuel pump - I think there is general consensus that those are all or nothing. AFTER i hardwired the wires that go to the top of the fuel pump cover straight to the fuel pump, never had an issue after that.

I found, and there is somewhere on the main site disucssing this, that the wires that went to the top of my fuel pump cover, through this epoxy-like substance and another terminal/connection, then to the fuel pump was burned up. So i took the wires and hardwired them to the fuel pump. As for the hole in the fuel pump cove which the wires went through, I put some hard, bondo like substance to ensure air tightness and to hold the wires in place.
Just trying to understand all this Rangie talk and tech....hoping to turn from noob to experienced.
