    Removing roof rack

I have the factory roof rack that is two seperate bars, not the sport rack. They have locks on the outsides and the PO did not include any keys so how are they removed.

From memory, the locks only hold the outer cover on, so you could destroy the lock or cover to gain access to the fixing bolts.
This seems uneccessarily drastic, so I'd try to find a local locksmith who can 'pick' the locks. They don't strike me as being very sophisticated.
The bolt heads may well be allen heads with a central pin, in which case you will need a appropriate 'security' style allen key.

I think these bars are made by Thule, so you could ask them your question.
Note there were two varients of these bars, the early ones had square section bars, the later ones had oval (more aerodynamic) bars.
I suspect the locking mechanism is similar, so my suggestiosn applies whichever you have.

Didn't even have to destroy the covers. I just stuck a screwdriver in the key holes jiggled it around and turned it. Wah La. Real high security locks.

No idea what the part number is. They are just the two seperate roof rack bars that came from the factory, I think I heard that Thule made them for LR.

I have the roof rack with the two bars going back and two bars going accross. If this is the same one that you had, how difficult was it to remove? Thank you.

gpohl: Sounds like you got the sport roof rack and ringop38 has the OEM roof rack. Just a guess. gpohl; does yours have three hold downs on each side running front to back?

Also, while on the subject, I had ordered new lights (00-02) and when they come I'd like to remove the light guards, but what do you guys use to fill the holes that are left from where they were drilled in?

And, I think I found a thread on removing the sport rack. I just hope that those little sliding doors are indeed under there. Are they easy to find and slide in when rack is removed?

I have the sport rack on there now. Very easy to install and remove but you must have a security allen head. Looks like an allen head wrench with a hole in the center. Yes the sliding doors are under there. They just slide closed.

I have been to all of the Sears, Auto Zones, and Advanced Autos in my area and no one seems to have the tool neccessary in removing the rack. Does anyone have an idea of where I can get it?
