L322 eas height sensor on p38

Has anyone tried using a L322 or Disco 2 height sensor on a p38?
They look to use the same 5v/ground/voltage out as standard sensor.
I'm wondering if the hall effect sensor is more accurate/reliable than the standard variable resistor ?
According to the Disco 2 rave the hall effect sensor has a circuit board inside the case to amplify the signal.

Re: L322 eas height sensor on p38

There is a guy here in town that has installed LR3 EAS into his P38. This is according to a friend who has seen it in person. I have yet to look at the P38, i have seen it, but the front end was on the bumpstops and the rear was up in the air. Next time i see it, i'll get some specifics and hopefully direct him to this website.

although, the likely hood of my friend being right might be low.

Thanks , will be interested to know.
My P38 has just started doing the dancing hippo on the front axle & looks like height sensors so now is the time to find out.

I don't see any reason why they wouldn't work...

The ECU takes the voltage reading and converts it into a bit count. The only thing I can think of is if the travel of the sensor arm is the same etc.

The front would obviously need to be re-calibrated afterwards for the new sensors.

My thought exactly, just waiting for a mate who is picking up a disco 2 sensor from a breaker, I'll post my findings once I get hold of it.

    Interested to hear the results!

Where about's in Auckland are you? I grew up in Hawkes Bay, then lived in Auckland before moving to the UK - was up in Birkenhead for a bit, then moved out west to Massey area..

I had 2 P38's over the years there, an Epsom Green '95 and then a Cobar Blue GEMS '99. I used to take my one to Stag 4x4 - good guys and they really knew their stuff!

    Cheers,

    Hi Marty
I'm in Milford on the Shore too, lived this side most of my life.
    I've got a 96 p38 4.6HSE in Rioja red with factory 18" wheels , nudge bar,
light gaurds& side steps , all from new, its a 1 previous owner
Rangey who was an uncle that we always said if he's going to
sell it to let us know, so we've had it about 6 years now & still
    love it
    Thanks

Re: L322 eas height sensor on p38

    Hi Jonathan,

The Shore is a nice place to be! used to love going up there for a few quiet beers with mates on a Sunday!

Both of my P38's had the side steps/nudge bar/spot lights. Didn't have the light guards, though my 2001 I have now has the full package. I've only ever owned P38's (took me awhile to save for the first one! and don't think I could actually own anything else (maybe an L322 in a few years time - but I think I'd keep the P38 aswell!)

Definitely keen to hear the results of your tests for the height sensors!

    Cheers,
    Marty

Re: L322 eas height sensor on p38

I just fitted a Disco 2 height sensor to the back of my second p38 to test if it would work , and it does!
The arm from the D2 sensor to the elbow is a little shorter but it seems to work fine.
I made a loom to go from the D2 sensor's plug [came with one from the breaker] and an old height sensor cable.
folded up a piece of alloy sheet I had & bolted it on the frame & D2 sensor, pluged it in & callibrated that corner.
All the settings are a bit high so i need to adjust the angle of the sensor to bring them down with the new bracket.
Next is a front sensor swap , the original arm is a lot shorter so a bit more to check on that.

Will take some pics when it stops raining , just pull it all off to measure up for the brackets to get folded with thicker alloy .

Re: L322 eas height sensor on p38

Just an up date, the D2 sensor is now fitted to the p38 I use every day & with further testing it goes out of range at the bump stop and full axel drop ( standard shocks) . I set the sensor up so it read right at standard ride height , seems the slightly shorter arm makes a difference you can't live with . I could extend the arm but wanted a factory sensor swap without mods, might look at the mount on the trailing arm it would travel less closer to the chassis mount.

Re: L322 eas height sensor on p38

    Cheers for the update...

Pity it's not a simple swap - but having said that - surely the arms are easy enough to lengthen? People do them for if they're lifting the vehicle on GEN III air springs... Just wondering if it's worth trying, if the actual sensor itself is more reliable? How are thee arms attached to the sensor? I suppose it would be too easy if you could just somehow swap the sensor arm from the P38 sensor to the Disco II one!

    Cheers,
    Marty

Re: L322 eas height sensor on p38

The Disco II arm from the sensor is attached on a shaft that's a lot smaller than the p38 sensor, thought about trying to lengthen the arm but wanted an off the shelf sensor ( with all mods on the p3 so it's an easy swap should one fail later , thinking of mounting it forward of the original mount with a new point to attach it on the trailing arm which would lessen the amount of movement, but not sure if I want to go down that route yet. Still looking into the front sensor , should only have to drill a hole in the plastic arm on the Disco II sensor & use p38 link to the trailing arm . Just need some time to check what the readings are going to look like .
