    Oil Leak up front

OK I've had a massive oil leak in the front of the engine for awhile now. My cracked header gave me an excuse to get my hands dirty and dig into the engine a bit. Here's a pic with everything out of the way. Can you guys tell where the leak could be originating from? Is that a head gasket leak? Thanks!

screw it. Just ordered up a head gasket kit. Might as well. I would be soooo pissed if it ended up being the culprit and I had to tear the motor down again.

Well, you ordered the HG set, so that is going to be covered.
Also, get a front cover gasket, and the o rings for the pressure relief valves and oil cooler lines. Also check the lines themselves for leaking.
I always replace the oil pump gears on the motors I fiddle with, it is @$100 for the gears BTW.
It may have been leaking in protest to being so dirty though

Yeah I already have all the front gaskets and seals in hand, since thats where I thought the leak was coming from. The HG kit from Atlantic British has all kinds of little bits in it, do you think those o-rings are in there? I can't seem to find a part list for the kit.

    Re: Oil Leak up front

    Dont see them in there.
19mm x 1.5mm IIRC, for the pressure relief valves.
No front cover gasket or front main seal neither from what I see.
It does have a set of valve seals in there though, so get to popping valves!
I would get the front and rear main seals, front cover gasket, pressure relief valve o rings, water pump and gasket, and oil pump gears. That's just me though. Would be bad if you did all that and the FMS or front cover gasket was the source huh?

With a leak this nasty, it'll be hard to tell which seal I replace actually fixes it! Its ok though, this truck is super easy to work on compared to other vehicles I've recently had the pleasure of repairing.

Last set of heads I worked on was a 3.2L Jeep and my standard parts store valve spring compressor couldn't get around the spring due to some walls. Do these heads have the same problem?

    Re: Oil Leak up front

No issues with the valve springs on these. I ran into the same issue on a Dodge/Jeep 4.7 HO though. Had to machine and weld a nut onto the valve spring compressor to get it to go low enough to compress the spring enough to remove the collets! Stupid design on the head....
If you have issues finding the pressure relief valve o rings, let me know and I will mail you some. I buy them in a bag of 50
Easiest way to do the RMS is to loosen the rear cap and swap them out. Then retorque the main bolts, then the side bolts.
If you need anything, feel free to PM me etc.
