A new fob should only be about $250 and takes a few days to arrive. A valet key is fine until your latch fails then you are not only locked out but your BeCM can think it is being stolen and completely disable your rig. Just get a proper fob so you don't end up another member complaining about being stranded with no way to open their rig.

That's only because he wants to charge you one hours labour for the 1 minute job of sync'ing the fob to the car. Do it yourself. Tell the stealer to supply it only and you will take the responsibility. Do you reading on sync'ing first, there is lots of info on RR.net.

Maybe find another dealer that is not crazy. The one I went to recently charged me about $260 for a new key and fob and you sync it yourself in the parking lot before you leave, it only takes a few seconds. You can find all the info on the key fob page on this site, but in a nutshell-

    Close the car.

Insert the new remote in the drivers side lock pressing and holding the button with the lock symbol.

Turn the key to the right as if locking, still holding the lock button down. Hold in this position for 3 seconds. Turn back to the centre position and pull the key out - STILL HOLDING THE KEY BUTTON.

Once the key is out release the lock button.

I agree with the above. order one full fob, and program yourself. Keep the fob handy and try to keep it in good shape. In the event your drivers side latch fails (and it will), then you can still get in.

Sidebar: I ordered 2 valet keys for my 1996 last week from the dealer. They were $16 each, and took one day to arrive. I believe that is the first time I've escaped the dealer parts dept for less than $100. Well worth it to grab a couple IMHO.

    Re: 1999 P38 valet keys

I only have the valet key, and it works fine for me, but then again my Rover is a second car, and Yes, the drivers door latch did fail, and the alarm got cranky, and it had to be flat bedded to the shop and have a new latch installed...to the tune of $260 for the part alone.

I too have only used the valet key for the last 6 years. However I will say I did not know about the lockout issue.
Recently ordered two valet keys at cost of $50 from the Stealer.
One opened the door one would not. Neither key started the vehicle.
    Origional keys both work.
    Now here is the kicker
They want to charge $150 an hour in lablor to figure out why the keys did not get made right
