    Callaway owners - air filter

    Hi,

After my 2000 was totaled several weeks ago, I picked up a Callaway. Have a question for the Callaway owners. For the air filter, anyone had to get a new one and if so was it $$$$$$? Old one is in bad shape. I tried to put a stock filter in for the time being, but it will not fit (cover will not close due to thicker seal)?

    Thanks,
    Duck

Re: Callaway owners - air filter

I ordered one for a GEMS and got a Land Rover part LR027408. I see when I look it up that it shows for a 95-02. Is there a specific one for GEMS. The size of the filter (length, width, height are fine). The issue is the seal being too thick for the cover. I wonder if the air box is different for the Callaway since it uses a different K&N type reusable filter. Mine just looks in too bad a condition (looks like it has been banged around to clean).

    Thanks.

I called the local Land Rover dealer and spoke to the parts department. They could not find anything on the air filter that comes with Callaways. Also they were convinced that the standard air filter should fit. I am extremely doubtful since the sealing portion are very different from the original Callaway filter and a standard filter. I guess I should have known I will have fun with this special model.

4.6 Callaway engine in 4.6 HSE

basically it says the intake is larger and carbon fiber, airbox could be standard still.

I will try again tonight and post pictures of what is happening as well as a comparison of the filters. Based on what the Callaway filter looks like vs stock, I am thinking there is a difference in the box as well. The seals are just too different. Will try again tonight and see if I just missed something when trying to install.

Well it is definitely different. I tried closing the air box, but no luck. It appears that the air box may be special to Callaway models. The filter I have is still usuable for now. It probably needs cleaning and new oil.

A good fix for now would be to run a "normal" GEMS airbox I think. That way, you could have a new filter and box to install if the need arose.
An email to K&N would be my next step though mate

Re: Callaway owners - air filter

My rig has the larger intake, shorter trumpets etc but still takes a standard air filter. WIX 42272 / K&N 33-2119. The WIX, NAPA Gold etc are a PITA to get in and twice now I have thought that the filter was incorrect. However with warming it up and giving it a nice slow squish the snaps finally close. After the initial fitting all is good until I have to replace it then I get to start all over again.

I've got both GEMS and a Bosch engined P38s and that looks like a Bosch air filter to me!

Re: Callaway owners - air filter

very nice, but it looks completely standard to me, which is what the other callaway owner was saying, the injection molding costs for such small numbers [of callaways] would have be prohibitive and if they were larger it would show up in the design too, it fits on the lucas, it fits into the standard locations point, its standard. any pics of the carbon intake? i've yet to see a decent pic of this, it looks quite meaty.

Re: Callaway owners - air filter

I will see if when the filter is warm that the seal will compress enough.

Btw when I look up air filters, they show one for 95-96 and then 97-02. GEMS went though 98. What is different about 95-96?

Sorry Larry, but the carbon fiber pipe is completely wrapped in electrical tape. Seems that they have a tendency to split along the seam. I can post a picture, but it does not look like carbon fiber.
