    HEAD GASKET LEAKING EXHAUST

Ok Guys, I have a 1999 P38 4.0 engine. My wife was just around the corner the other day and called me saying the Rover now sounds like a go-kart! I told her to drive it home and park it. The exhaust leak is from the passenger side head gasket. I would like to do this job myself at home just for the satisfaction of doing it myself. I have the Rave CD I downloaded from Rover.com. Please give me some tips/advise from you experts on this job. A few months ago I replaced the water pump, thermostat, radiator, and fan clutch due to top tank of radiator cracked at overflow hose fitting and leaking coolant. I also replaced 3 hoses that were soft. I've never done a HG job before. Any advise would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Do a search, and you will get all the info you need. If you are mechanically inclined, it is an easy task, but a little time consuming.

If it has tits or tires, your gonna have problems with it.

    Re: HEAD GASKET LEAKING EXHAUST

Is it a GEMS or Bosch? 99 is the crossover year...
The passenger side is the easier of the two IMO, so that is good news.
You already replaced the water pump etc, so I think you have the basics covered
Follow procedures and you wont have an issue.
Remember to get the head checked for being perfectly flat and pressure tested. While it is off, you would be well advised to replace the valve seals and relap the valves. That part is free basically, you just need a valve spring compressor and valve lapping rod and paste.
Do a search as Tom said and there will be lots of results (unfortunately), follow the tips and you will be fine. If you have any specific questions feel free to post them up.

iV'E BEEN STUDYING THIS rave MANUAL. It really jumps around a lot. Anyone know where there are directions from start to finish just on the Head Gaskets? I'm not seeing a list anywhere of everything that has to come off in order to get the heads off.

    WWW.Alldata.com is what I use.
It will list the steps needed for each job, a lot more in depth than the FSM I also have.
Mine is a Gems, otherwise I would post them up for you.

    Re: HEAD GASKET LEAKING EXHAUST

If you are mechanically inclined, it is an easy task, but a little time consuming.

Remember these words? If you need to rely on the RAVE, then it will take you a week to complete this repair.

Take it apart, and keep everything like nuts, bolts, etc. in an order since it is your first time taking the upper end of an engine apart. Once you start disassembly, you will realise it is a simple design, the bosch injection system just makes it look intimidating.

We will be here to help as you go
