What is the best coolant to use?

    Hello,

Can somebody please explain in detail what type of coolant to use in my 4.6 ltr gems engine?

    - Some say it must be green
    - Some people say it must be red
    - Others state that you must use a glycol based antifreeze and add destilled water in a 50%-50% mix
    - Then if heard that you must never use Glycol based antifreez in an aluminim block.

So, as you can imagine I am a little confused....

Thanks in advance for any info to this question,
    Alex

Use whatever is good in Aluminum.

I just use distilled water, but the low last night was 69 degrees here.

    GEMS = Green
Bosch = Red and that's just because it was the latest greatest thing on the market.

boooooo! we'll be dust and maggots long before green or orange antifreeze actually makes a difference and ruins an engine.

    Disclaimer...don't mix them.

Where I live (The Netherlands, Europe) the autoshop warehouses only sell Blue coolant, which is glycol based.
They also sell long-life coolant which has a pink/violet colour.
I've never seen the "green" coolant.
I also found Valvoline long-life coolant which is red but they only sell it in 1 liter package, and costs a fortune.(about 7.5 euros/liter = US$ 11.50/liter)

Green is supposed to be enviormentally unfriendly, since you'll got so many tree huggers in Europe it aint sold over there no more. Anything will work so long as you totally drain what's in the system now so nothing gets mixed, the red Valvoline is OEM or close to it, does that make it any better? I dont know, it will last longer but I'm not sure so that it will protect your motor any better.

What color's in it now? Dump, flush, and refill with the same color. Anti-freezes are more effective when mixed 50/50 with distilled water. Be sure to read and follow the manufacturer recommendations on the jug. Some comes pre-mixed, some is straight, it's an economy DIY thing. Not familiar with the Euro brands but match the colors, flush, and follow the mfg's instructions and you should be good to go. The technology behind the stuff was the subject of the mother-of-all anti-freeze discussions here on this board some years ago. You can search, if you're interested.

I've been using the GM product (orange) for their aluminium V8 engines for the past 3 years in my MY99 4.6. Excellent...radiator clean as can be. did the PaulP38a trick and mounted an old webcam lens on an inspection mirror with an LED... you can poke around all sorts of interesting places with it...radiators/cylindersetc

Re: What is the best coolant to use?

Hello, thanks for the responses so far.

I started out with the "red" Valvoline stuff after my engine overhaul 2000 miles ago.
As it still uses coolant I've been adding a little of the "bleu"stuff every day as the red stuff costs a fortune.
After reading they should not be mixed, I learned something again.

I will proceed to flush the system and not mix anything in the future.

Also I am planning to use the "IRONTITE" ceramic sealer procedure to try and solve the coolant usage problem. (I'll start anather threat about the best sealer I should use)

Re: What is the best coolant to use?

Dunno if it's the best but I bought the "red/orange" stuff from the local Super Cheap Auto store when I "refreshed" the top of the engine a couple of months back. After a couple of thousand Km and quite a few 30DegC+ plus days (=hot for you non-Metric types ), the Rangie has not gone through any coolant or moved past half way on the temperature guage... please don't let me jinx myself now I've said something positive about it

    Cheers, Paul.
