How many miles can you realistically get out of a 97 Rover?

So, I have tuned and tweaked my BMW 3 series to the point that it is no longer a practical daily driver but rather a show queen. As a result, I'm looking to pick up a unique, fun every day driver and have been looking at buying an older range rover.

Recently, I found a 97 Rover 4.6 with 175k miles that fits into my budget of under 5k and wanted to see if that was even worth considering. How long will these run? I had a jeep to 250k prevoiusly and, if these can do similar, would love to get behind the wheel.

Thoughts would be greatly appreciated as to pointers and basic guidelines for buying a used one

I been a Bmw guy practically my whole adult life and just a couple of months ago I steped into a 96 Range Rover, mine has 260k miles , runs and looks great the only problem I had, was that my key needed a new battery and I had some issues reprograming it, a few oil leaks here and there but nothing major, a good experience so far; granted I have only put about 4k miles onit, but just in case when I have to take long trips I use my e39, I don't have the same confidence on my Range rover as my Bmw.

I have a 96 with 289,000 and its running great (same engine, trans, and all, only coil conversion on that one). Just sold it to a friend in California, though haven't shipped it yet. I have had several high mile ranges.

I was working on a 2001 last week that had 440,000 on the clock. It was in superb condition except for a little play in the drive chain upon pull away.

Not sure if original engine as it purred little a little kitten.

Realistically, it depends on how well maintained the truck is. The previous owner needs to care a lot for the truck.

I have 115k miles on my 2000 4.6 HSE and it needs a lot of work. Expensive work. And I know as soon as it is fixed, within a month I will be putting more money into it. Because I want my truck to be in good shape mechanically (and cosmetically).

If the previous owner half a***** it, then you are going to have a nightmare truck that is going to require a lot of work. Most used Range Rovers (in the P38 bodystyle) are like this. So be careful. I looked for 2 years and (yes I counted) 46 trucks.

Ideally, if you have the cash to spend on parts (and either have a really cheap mechanic or DIY) then this can be the truck for you. But if you want something that will start every time, no worries and cheap to fix, this might not be the best truck for you.

An average one of these is a heavily abused 3 series in terms of mechanics.

    Things to check
    Air springs or coil converted
Head gaskets (replaced or needs replacement). They have aluminum heads that can warp easily
    Transmission
    Slipped liners
    Heater Core
All electonics are working (if LEDs are not showing, it is usually a light, not a big deal). They can be electrical nightmares, like mine that decided it didn't like my BECM (computer) and fried all the boards)
If the check engine light is on, it most likely is an O2 sensor. Not a big deal

If the truck cosmetically is nice, you have a better chance that it is mechanically nice

Wow, I have never heard of any car lasting that long, let alone a RR.

Re: How many miles can you realistically get out of a 97 Rover?

When I met my partner she had an ex-taxi Ford Falcon with 800,000kms on the clock and going strong, although it felt a bit vague and loose, if I can put it that way.

With a P38... I have not had mine as long as some of you guys but overall my feeling is I would rather have a well-maintained high-miler than an abused or neglected low-miler. Expensive things do fail on these cars and a well looked-after high mile vehicle will have had them fixed at least once already.

I am iffy on mine, I now think the owner before me was a bit slack with it but the owner before him was pretty careful with it. So it has had the heads off at least once for some maintenance inside the motor, new head gaskets, etc, all stuff that might be just waiting to fail on a lower mile car.

    Anyway, just my thoughts.

My DSE has done 130000 the EAS works perfect it has no rattles no oil, water or diesel leaks , only one thing that dont work is the heated drivers seat but i will fix that at a later date, i think they just need a little more attention than the average vehicle, and as for the dealers service history all that means is some guy in Land Rovers has hit your service book with a rubber hammer, does not prove your vehicle has been serviced in the correct manner

I have a '97 4.6 HSE with 145000 miles on it. Despite some recent repairs (Fusebox, Fuel Pump), it runs great. I converted the airbags to Arnott ones, the shocks to Bilstein, and that is about it.

Original engine and gearbox. It still even passes california smog with flying colors.

Good to hear; I have 100 000 so a good way to go yet!
Mind you this does backup the point I keep saying with the P38 Diesel - it's BWM - look after it and they are exceptionally reliable.

Totally agree regarding the dealerships: I used to use a local Indy (before I moved) he was utterly brilliant, he spent over an hour with it before I brought the car with no charge.
My Dads Disco he took to another indy and I saw a 'garage chav' basically racing it around the industrial estate for the test drive; some of the LR's I saw out from the local main dealer I suspect were not much different to that.
P38A DHSE shiped UK to SA, very rare in SA!

odd that mine has 130,000 miles uk on it and apart from new front disks all my failures have been BMW bits
those being crank damper pulley, flywheel, crank sensor, and EDC with a mind of its own :P

but i still love it because when it all clicks its a pure joy to trundle along some rural highway in total comfort.
