    INSTRUMENT GAUGES not Working !

I have a '97 Range Rover 4.6 HSE. One day when I started the car, the instrument panel does not show its diagnostic lights except the SRS. The gauges do not work - needles of fuel, tachometer, odometer and temperature stay at zero. Gauge lights are okay, engine runs fine, aircon runs fine (except no light). Headlights, turn lights, everything works fine.

I brought the car to specialist. He removed my instrument cluster and put in another p38's instrument cluster (thats working) - still gauges do not work. He concludes that its the BeCM. Removed the BECM, opened it - everything looks okay except for some rusty portions which he removed and cleaned. Then put back the BECM. STILL the gauges do not work.

What could be the problem? Please advise possible causes of this problem.

    Welcome to the forum!

Exchanging BECMs/instrument clusters on a P38A is a very, very bad idea!
Both of them store the mileage of the vehicle, if you exchange one of them the one with the lower mileage will adapt the higher mileage from the other!

My guess would be a broken connection/connector somewhere between BECM and instrument cluster, because all of the lights are controlled by the BECM (maybe except the SRS light, which might be operated directly by the SRS ECU because of its importance)
Might also be a fuse, you should check all the fuses/relays in the BECM and in the engine bay.
Another thing often responsible for strange electrical problems are bad grounds, check your grounds in the BECM and elsewhere in the car.

Download RAVE, the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual is very important when hunting electrical gremlins in Range Rovers.

Welcome to the forum - Please update your profile with your location.

Heavy corrosion in the fusebox has been known to kill the instrument cluster. I would take the fuse box out and carefully inspect.

Since none of them are working, it sounds like a grounding issue. This is a common problem, easy to fix but sometimes difficult to track down Try to measure the ground to the instrument panel with a multimeter and clean connectors at both ends.

I've seen this problem more times than i can remember.

It is the becm at fault. Usaully just the srs light stays on & maybe the petrol gauge light but everything else stays dead.

Unfortunatly, you'll need to replace your becm

What usually causes the BeCM to pack up? Is it moisture?

I'm with Rick on this, the SRS lamps are driven from a different plug,so beyond checking the wires going into c242 - the ins pack connector from the Becm there is little you can do but replace the Becm.I have a 96my DSE hanging around my workshop that suffered the same issue,a new one sorted that - now all I have to do is get that horrible BMW thing to run.

    "horrible BMW thing"

I see we share the same opinion, except you spell Buick incorrectly.

Thanks. Have checked the voltage on each and every fuse - looks okay. No corrosion in fusebox. Also checked the voltage connectors at instrument cluster - okay. The fuses are all okay. STILL the instrument gauges do not work. Am really confused as everything looks okay, except for the instrument gauges. Am afraid to buy parts cause have not exactly pin point the part thats wrong.

Btw am looking for the place to update my profile but don't see it. When I registered, it only asked for my password n email address.

What is c242, where is it located?

Just FYI, if AllyV8 offers a different opinion to everyone else, it is usually best to heed his advice The man is a genius
