Re: Aftermarket Stereo Fitment - Keeping the Sub

Well I'm having a heck of a time trying to get my new head unit working in my truck at all. I have it connected through an ISO connector to the JVC harness that goes to the HU. Thanks to the crutchfield pin-out for 11 speaker systems I was able to wire that fine. The HU stays on even without the key put to Accessory. When i switched the wires for "ACC" to the "Constant", it then work correctly and only turns on when the key is put to Accessory. I have no sound from any of the speakers however.
So then i take the door cards off to see what's going on and lo and behold the PO must have started to swap out the HK system for something else but neglected to leave the HK system in. So basically i had the wiring still installed from the HU to the door but no speakers in the doors. (which would explain why no sound) So what should I do now? I'm guessing now's the time to get new speakers and not have to worry about the Ambler Attenuator (although i do have all the parts to build one at my workbench). Has anyone got any recommendations for speakers to replace in the factory locations? I'm hoping they're standard sizes so I don't have to try to source out another HK system.

Yeah actually that looks really good. I especially like what you did with the grills. That turned out much better than i had expected. I will more than likely just cut out a few of the fins on mine and see how that works. Just having that big hole there in a rig that i'll be getting in and out of a lot with muddy boots makes me a little nervous that i'm going to end up kicking out the speaker... I really wasn't sure if i needed to do the full 10 speaker replacement in the doors or if I could get away with just 2-ways in the doors. I'm building my rover for some medium off road fun, so it's not like i'm going to need a top of the line replacement, but it would be nice to have some music while waiting for the winch to pull my buddies out of some trouble.

I just spent hours going through "Range Rover P38" on E-Bay and remember seeing most if not all the speakers (I know I saw a pair of the plastic tweeters X2 for the front that clip into the door outside and above the door cards and both front speakers for sale individually but might all be from same person which would allow you to combine shipping and save $$$$) from part-outs there. I would start with the seller "iamthedrillbit". Hope this helps.

"bawareca" has the tweeters listed for $59.99 + free shipping and in perfect working and visual order on E-Bay on 1st page after the search I previously posted..

Well if i'm going to be doing a factory replacement of 16 year old speakers for $60 for just the tweeters... I should probably have my head examined. Like I said, my rig's for bumping around in fields and bush. I only paid $2k for it so there's no way i'm dumping in a $500 replacement set (remember i need the amps in each door too) I'll just do as nosaint did and put in some 6.5 2-ways and be done with it. Luckily i don't need to rewire the doors because the wiring is there and i tested with a continuity tester. Wiring's good.

Unforunately a plug and play option is out of the question because I'd still have to build the Ambler Attenuator and fashion it to the speakers, plus wait (and pay) for shipping.

I've definitely made up my mind to just buy some replacement door speakers and wire them up to my JVC HU. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Ok, i guess you'd still need "component" speakers, crossovers plus the tweeters [you must still have those] and a mid and/or bass - if its to be comparable with the original system.

Re: Aftermarket Stereo Fitment - Keeping the Sub

Again... there is no "original system" there's just the covers where speakers go behind in the doors, a blank spot where the factory Clarion deck was (i'm guessing it was the clarion as it's an early '96) which is the new home of my JVC HU and the wires from the doors to the ISO connector. 2 way 6.5's is what i'm going with. I may put my rockford fosgate 10 in the back at some point, but right now as long as i have some sort of music i'm happy.

i think my point was you got that adapter and was expecting it to work on the standard system, it was only when you discovered no sound and removed the door cards that your plans must have changed, which is of course absolutely fine by me, it was just a view on getting you up and running with the least of fuss.

Yeh I see what you're saying. I appreciate the help but it looks like thanks to the PO there's not much left of the old system to get it up and running. Which really is fine by me because people have complaints about the HK system all over the place. For all the trouble to find all the speakers and amps it's easier to just buy some new speakers and not have to be concerned with the old HK system.
