Talking 2004 - key won't turn in ignition

Tonight my key would not turn I the ignition.

I pulled fuse 18 and reinstalled and this reset the immobilization system and the key would turn and the truck will start and run (drove 75 miles after this and pulled the fuse a second time to start it again.)

Everything else seems to work. The key locks and unlocks the doors, the cruise works, etc.

When the truck is turned off the steering wheel will not lock.

The battery reads 14.0v when the truck is running and 12.55v when the truck is turned off.

I'm thinking battery (one year old interstate), but am interested in other's thoughts.

    Any suggestions are welcomed.

    Thx

try pulling the key out turn it 180 degrees and insert it ,
if it works then the transponder might need to be moved inside the key

Re: 2004 - key won't turn in ignition

Generally this is a failure of the Steering Lock ECU, which is only serviceable with the entire upper column itself.

I have had them come back to life after a few power cycles, but usually not.

The SL ECU controls both the locking of the column, and the ignition switch. If the column lock/unlock motors cannot do their job correctly, it faults, and will not unlock the ign. switch. The ignition switch is also commanded unlocked when the remote is used to unlock the vehicle, which is why resetting power to it will give you one cycle.

There was recently a member here who wired up a switch to cycle power to the SL ECU, to be able to reset power to it without pulling the fuse.

A used column will work, if you can find one in good condition.

Merlin, rotating key did not work.

Dave, does this mean I should be able to continue to pull the fuse until I find the column? Is there something else I can test to narrow down that it is this ECU?

    Thx guys.

The only 'test' would be to have someone with a T4 pull the Steering Column Lock History, which will show the faults that it has. I have not seen anything other then this cause what you're describing, with the column staying unlocked.

Can you hear the column try to lock/unlock itself at all when the key is inserted and does not turn.

Yes, resetting power should give you one unlock cycle for the key each time.

I do not hear the locking attempt. Is this indicative of the ecu being bad or my hearing being bad (which it is .

ECU, or motor itself, but might want to have someone else take a listen too, as when it's failing, it will be much quieter then normal.

What else does it control? Might I try something to see if it is the ecu? What do you mean about the"motor"?

SL ECU doesn't do much except the column and the key.

The motor being the part that physically locks/unlocks the steering column.

Re: 2004 - key won't turn in ignition

A temporary work around is to not remove the key from the ignition. I have found that the key will continue to turn if not removed. I simply placed a black cloth over the key so it's not obvious that a key is in the ignition.

Re: 2004 - key won't turn in ignition

That will work for right now, as it will not try to re-lock itself until the key is removed. However, you will be keeping a few different electronics alive in doing so, so the battery may very well drain down if left too long like this. I would not let it sit for more then just overnight like this without a secondary power source for the battery.

This is true in regards to the battery. I didn't add it to my work-around post because I expected members would already realize this... If not managed properly it will kill your battery.

Re: 2004 - key won't turn in ignition

I had the same problem on a 2004 HSE that I bought, guy said it was a bad battery so i bought it planning on replacing the battery boy was i wrong. The only way mine would crank after i killed it was pulling the fuse or disconnecting the battery.
First I disconnected the battery and removed the center console and cleaned the ignition switch (amazing what comes out of that switch) (long story short)
After farther trouble shooting and reading i removed the side vents, top dash, glove compartment, headunit, middle dash, steering wheel and shrouds.
At the right side of the steering coulmn is a silver cap held in with 5 roll pins i decide to keep going ( remember a steering coulmn is $4500 from RR). I discovered the solenoid was bad and was never sucking in when 12 volts was applied (just for grins i put it on my test bench applied 12 volts would not suck in but would hold its self in)
When key is turned off power is sent to that relay and the steering wheel lock is then activated. When key is put into the igntion the steering wheel lock is relased and solenoid is released.

Long story short found a used steering column for $1600 replaced and going to part my old one out.

@RR2004ML, looks like I'll need to do all of that also. Had you torn your RR apart like this before? How long did it take?
