Trailer kit installation - she no worky

Everything was really straight forward on the trailer kit with the exception of two things:
    1. There were two relays included in the kit, a green 5-pin unit and a black 4-pin unit. I used the black unit since it matched all the other relays. If I use the green one, it causes the radio and some other things to turn on even with the key set to off. LOL So I assume the black one is right. However there isn't any indication of where to use the second relay. For use on some other model RR maybe?
    2. The orange wire that you connect into one of the wiring harnesses is a little confusing. The instructions seem to indicate it goes in pin 3. As I am looking at the back of the plug while it is plugged into the block (wires coming out at me), the top row left two pins are vacant, and the bottom row third from the left is vacant. I'm assuming it is the top row second from the left that it goes in and that's what I went with.
Not really sure what the problem could be. It seems really simple other wise.

When I plug in my round-7-pin to 4-pin flat adapter, I see that I have 12v on all the pins which is incorrect. Per the wiring installation page at:

    http://www.rangerovers.net/outfittin...m/harness.html

It looks like everything is installed correctly even though the relays look different. Grrr guess I will roll it to the dealer tomorrow unless anyone has any ideas...

This depends on your VIN number. One my 04 the green one was the right one. The second relay is not used.

From what I saw in mine both the upper and lower Pin 3s were empty. I opened the connector and put it in the bottom one since that was where most of the wires were. You do have to open the connector and snap it back into place (I'm sure you did this).

Gah, this is driving me nuts! I'm totally positive that I installed everything correctly but for the life of me can't get it to put the correct voltage on the line. I wish the documentation was a little more verbose.

Have you hooked it to a trailer? I know the module does not work with LED trailer lights, because they do not draw enough current. I don't know for sure, but the trailer module may send a low amperage current to check for trailer lights, so it knows when the trailer is connected. With no draw, that may read as 12v.

Try it with a load and see what it does...

Ohhh... that's a good thought. And I do believe my trailer has LED lights. Hmmm ok I am going to go check this out again.

So just picking this back up again... I'm fairly convinced that the kit is installed correctly, and I don't have LED lights on the trailer they are all incandescent. The 4-pin adapter that I used is the same one I have used for years on all my other rigs. So that leaves me with two options really:

    1. The trailer wiring kit is not operating correctly.
    2. The 4-pin adapter is incorrectly adapting the connection.

So as far as point #2: Atlantic British sells this part. Is that unique to the Range Rover? I was under the understanding that the 7 pin connection had a standard wiring output. So any 7pin-4pin adapter would work. Anyone know? I am really at a loss for making this PIA work...

Luckily I have my 20yo Jeep to save the day when i need to tow haha.

Welp, I'm not sure how or why, but after much finagling and poking and a few beers and bowl, it just magically started working. In all honest I kinda think I have a rough ground connection in the connector on the trailer, so that might have been part of the problem. I think I will cut the connector off and throw a new 7-pin on there.

There seems to be a bit of magic involved here. I installed the kit on my 2006 RR HSE and plugged in two different trailers that I have been using over the past few years. The signal lights flashed at double speed. But then, after I "rebooted" the RR, it all seemed to work itself out. Gotta love the character built into these vehicles.

One suggestion for using the 4 pole, try one of the 7-pole to 4-pole adapters, see how it works. It can always be returned to your place of purchase.
