I picked up our 2011 HSE (5.0, non-SC) last fall with about 52k miles and it now has just under 60k, so I need to have it serviced. I believe that it did have the brake fluid replaced at 45k. The manual doesn't call for anything special beyond the engine oil and filter at 60k. The rear differential has electronic locking, I'm not sure if that means it's got the locking differential (oil due at 75k) or non-locking differential (front and rear due at 150k or 10 years). Transfer case oil is due at 75k miles and transmission fluid and filters due at 150k or 10 years. I've read that the transmissions can be a problem and am considering having that done now. I don't have any timing chain noises. Are there other items that should be done early?
Is there a good write-up for the engine oil and filter change? I haven't done it yet for this vehicle.
I could use a good procedure for the transmission fluid and filters. I've got a good independent mechanic, but I want to make sure he has the correct guidance.
I had asked my dealer about the trans service last time it was in, and they said there is nothing to do...it's pretty much non service item for the late ZF's...
I did the oil change myself, using a Mahle filter from Amazon and Mobil 1 EP 5W-20 from Walmart, about $50 for two 5-liter jugs.
The transmission oil pan can be removed, and I remember reading a fluid and filter replacement somewhere. Maybe that was for my diesel Sprinter, though. I'd definitely like to be proactive on keeping the Range Rover running well. I had to spend $5k to have the tranny replaced in my Sienna AWD van (at 150k miles), and I imagine it would be much worse for the RR.
Yea, never believe dealers when they say no service for ZF. ZF themselves have a full service schedule depending on use. Common folks, always service your tranny!!
One of the service guys at Land Rover Portland quietly recommended a flush at 60,000 miles for our 2011 HSE even though it isn't recommended then.
In spite of working for a dealership, he seemed honest and helpful.
Atlantic British has some pretty good service schedules available for download that seem clear and also match up with what the manual says, at least on my 08
This would be easier with a lift, but I don't think it will be too bad on jackstands. I'll just have to make sure it's fairly level for the final fill. It doesn't look much worse than an engine oil change and there's less than half as much fluid to catch.
The mid 90s to early '00 BMW 7 series had 'lifetime' fluid, that was total BS. I have buddies in Europe who would go to ZF factory-run facilities to get the tranny fluid changed, new filter, etc.
There is no such thing as lifetime fluids. The honest BMW techs and parts guys all cried BS on 'lifetime' fluid.
