    60,000 mile service - $1400??

I am curious what you guys are paying for a 60,000 mile service. My dealer quoted over $1400. When I asked for a description of work to be done, he said spark plugs, oil and filter, cabin filter, air filter and inspection.

He also stated that the spark plugs are around $45 each. Can that be right?

Anyone know a good independent in So Cal? La or OC.

    Thanks

Not sure what year you have. I have an 06.

Genuine Spark plugs - $11 bucks each
    http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/LR005253G.cfm?bc=ab

Genuine oil filter - $13 bucks
    http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/4137784G.cfm

Genuine air filter - $34 bucks
    http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/PHE000112G.cfm

Genuine cabin filter - $29 bucks
    http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/JKR500020.cfm

Oil - myabe $50 bucks tops

So thats less than 250 bucks in parts at retail rates. Call it 1 hour for an oil and filter change.

so you are telling me they are going to spend the next 10 hours doing a basic inspection at $100/h? uh.... Bring it to my house and I'll do the 1 hour of work for 700-

BS... BTW plugs on the 06-09 are only replaced every 100k....

WOW - thanks for the quick replies.

It sounds like I am thinking the same thing that you guys are about the service. What a racket. I am not afraid to pick up a wrench and do my own work, especially if it saves me a ton of $$.

Mine is an 03 by the way.

Anyone used the shop in Huntington Beach? Custom European Motor Cars?

Thanks for your help and the links.

I haven't used Custom - but if you are in Huntington Beach, you can use Evosport for all your engine/transmission service work. They are a BMW specialty shop with great mechanics and know all about our motors/transmissions. If you need to get into diagnostics, then they don't have a diagnostic computer to read Range Rover - but for service work it's no issue. They are off Graham and McFadden. Tell them I sent you.

    Re: 60,000 mile service - $1400??

LR Pasadena quoted me $ 2,000 for 60k service. I'm @ 57k miles and performing my own service instead of the stealer.

    Oil change
filter - 18 bucks from the dealer
oil - propbably run you 50 to 75 bucks depending what brand you use.

Air filter - 63 bucks from the dealer
took less than 5 minutes to install

Spark plug - less than hour install
BKR6EQUP - got it from local shop $8.75 = around 72 bucks for eight.

Checked the fluids yesterday and topped off PAS. Went to the dealer and bought power steering fluid for 15 bucks. Probably could have got a regular fluid from local shop but not sure if it is the same. While I was there I picked up a Range Rover key chain for 18 bucks LOL

All in all I spent $ 261.00 for parts and my own time DIY. To top it off, I'm enjoying every minute of it

Next week, I will be replacing the upper and lower hose, coolant, and cabin filter.

    Goodluck,

    Re: 60,000 mile service - $1400??

I paid about $1800 for my 60 month/60,000 mile service on my 2004 RR. Unfortunately I am "forced" to go to the dealer because I have an extended warranty and if I do not have my maintenance done at the dealers, they may (and probably would) use it as an excuse not to cover a problem under warranty down the road. In fact, I received a letter a year later informing me it was time for my 72 month maintenance even though I drove it less than 1,000 miles since the 60 month check - cost me another $400. It almost seems not worth it to pay for the extended warranty since I have to pay all that money to have all the "recommended" maintenance done at the dealers.

    Re: 60,000 mile service - $1400??

Thank you all for your help. I didn't realize there were so many so cal guys here!

phil - thanks for the service list. I am going to set aside a day next weekend and bang all of this out. The only part I am not sure about is the part that says "grease wheel center surfaces." They are not talking about greasing the wheel bearings I don't think, so can anyone help me out with this one?

As for changing the coolant - are there restrictions on whether or not this can be done on my own? Does anyone know how much coolant the system holds? I want to be sure I have a big enough vessel to catch it all.

Is there a special type of coolant?
Is there a special type of power steering fluid?

Oh - I called Custom European Motorcars and they quoted me $900. Better, but I will still tackle it myself.

    Thanks!

You do not have to have regular service done by a dealership regardless of your extended warranty.

    Re: 60,000 mile service - $1400??

I am in the UK where labour rates are much, much higher than anywhere aside from Moscow I have ever lived or worked. Main dealers in big cities charge GBP 140 per hour, call that USD 225and in the rural areas about GBP 115 an hour, call that USD190.

I therefore use an independent who only does Land Rovers and my 60000 service was GBP 160 all up but excluding the poil which I provide (I use Mobil 1 fully synthetic and have done since it was first launched when I used to import it from the US). This includes a sales tax of 17.5 percent.

So USD 1400 does indeed sound a little on - how shall I put this - the steep side.

for the 2006 (mine is a 2006) all the dealer will do at 60k is:

    1. change the oil and filter.
    2. change the Pollen filter
    3. change the intake air filter
    4. rotate tires (side to side)
    5. top up other fluids if necessary
    6. look around and find things to fix

basically an oil change with a couple paper filters thrown in...

Maybe this is why the cost is only $530 at the dealer, I will check tomorrow and find out what it intells
