Has anyone had this? I turn the key to start the car and it will not start and something in the steering column makes noise and the key will not turn? It sounds like the steering wheel lock is trying to unlock but the key will not turn to start the car. I have to turn the wheel to get it to lock and then turn the key and sometimes it lets me turn the key and start the car, then sometimes i sit there and do that for about 5-10 minutes and it finally unlocks the key and i can start the car. The last time this happened they said my battery was too low, now 3,000 miles later after I changed the battery, it has started again? I asked the dealer to check the alternator and the charge on the battery and they said it was within Land Rover parameters. Need some help guys!!!

Yes, I had the same problem. Here is the fix...

Unfortunately, you are experiencing a faulty steering column. The key won't turn and you hear multiple "click-clicks" from the steering column. I had this issue and the car would not start in 100+ degree heat in AZ. Some times the steering column would unlock and I had the ability to start the car. But finally, it just stopped working. I had the battery tested, the battery passed in flying colors.

So I took it into Land Rover and they replaced the steering column under warranty. There are apparently 3 ECUs in the steering column and these have been known to be defective. It is expensive if you are NOT under warranty. Good luck!

My 03 RR has similar problem. the key will not turn. gear box and steering wheel would lock. if i put the key in the ignition switch the steeing colum would unlock, but then lock again after 1/4 turn.

I had the RR towed to the dealership. It sat there for a week they called me back saying it was the steering column. Warranty company does not agree and is refusing to pay. I have read other boards suggestion this is the starter switch.

Does anyone have experience where replacing the starter switch solved this problem? or the steering column?

Thanks

That really must take nerve for the warranty company to challenge the analysis of the mechanics at the delaers. What is your warranty company?

I have had this sort of denial from the warranty company (Land Rover Assured) myself once, but the dealer people went to bat for me and got it worked out.

Get the dealers people to weigh in further on this, going up the ladder if necessary.

Best,

Yes, I have.
My problem was fuse 37 blew when I turned the key into position two and LR dealer said the steering columm had to be replaced: € 700 plus labour.
They said the locking pin motor took to mutch amps and therefore blew the fuse.
I changed the ignition switch, bought it with BMW dealer for a few euros, and my problems are gone since.
Most BMW dealers have this switch on stock as it creates many electric problems on there 7-series to!

That is the difference between a good dealer and a bad stealer.
In my ( belgium ) extended LR " approved quality warranty " there is a list mentionning all items covered ; what is not specified or listed is not covered and the steering columm was not. Radio, Amp, CD player, wiring etc are not covered either.
I will even go further: a very bad stealer would let you pay for a repair while he will recover the money from the warranty company.

My Warranty company is Western General. I paid $4400 for the Gold Plus coverage and this is my first attempt at a claim. Has anyone had any experience with Western General?

They pointed me back to the dealership again today to ask the dealer to come up with a different diagnosis to the problem. The dealership had offered to install the new steering column, if it did not solve the problem they would remove the part at no charge. The warranty company thinks they should be able to repace individual components to solve the problem without replacing the entire steering column.

Does anyone know if you can individually replace the ECM that are in the column?

the upper steering column assembly houses the column locking mechanism and ECU
the components are assembled with non-removable pins and is therefore non-serviceable. Failure of any steering lock components will require the replacement of the upper steering column assembly.

In my case the steering column unlocked from the moment I put the ignition key into the ignition lock; it was only after turning to position two that this fuse blew and this problem was curred with replacing the ignition switch made by Valeo.

In your case the Hall sensor in the ignitionswitch body could be faulty as it gives information to the ECU if a key is rotating in the switch or not.

I would go for renewing the ignition switch first

The ignition switch is located under the mechanical ignition key lock on the center console.
You have to remove this center console to get access; I did it myself in less than two hours.
I bought it with BMW, part nr. 61326901961 and costs euro 35,71 excl VAT

What I do not know is whether there is any impact on how everything else works that is carried inside that wiring loom that you plug this thing into. So far I have seen no ill effects. No lights or anything, so this may be a fix that keeps everyone from having to replace their dang column. does anyone know how long this thing has been out and available for purchase?

I can second the emulator box. I put one in my 2003 HSE and it fixed the issue instantly. My steering column had failed in the unlocked position, however. If yours has failed in the locked position, you'll need to unlock it one way or another before the box will help you.
