No the 86" and 88" 4x2 Series Ones made in the 50s were the first.

...but they weren't production vehicles, just batches, like the later Series IIs.
None of them were for the domestic market.

Agreed, in an article I was reading last week it was stated that Land Rover had only ever made all wheel drive trucks. Well most of us know that all of the early LR rigs were four wheel drive, not all wheel drive. Again, semantics. The long and short is that another couple of options are coming down the marketing turnpike. We can be purists and ***** about it like I do about the Sport, or we can accept it and be happy that the Range Rover and Land Rover names will continue to be around.

The distinction between all wheel drive and four wheel drive doesn't exist over here.
Unless we are discussing trucks with 6 or 8 wheels...

Really? Over here all wheel drive is a full time four wheel drive system. Four wheel drive is a two wheel drive rig with selectable four wheel drive option.

I knew that but over here all four wheel drives are referred to as four wheel drives; audi quattro, Suzuki Jimny, Series 1 LR, Range Rover, Subaru Justy.
I think "all wheel drive" is a term invented by a US marketing man.

What is the difference between Full time Four Wheel Drive (4WD) All Wheel Drive (AWD) and automatic All Wheel Drive (auto AWD)?
